When you think of brake repair, you likely think of having your brake pads or brake shoes replaced. This is one of the most common brake jobs completed. However, this is not the only repair that may be needed for your automobile's brake system. If you do not replace your brake pads soon enough, they can start to dig into the rotors, and you may need to have the rotors replaced. Here are a few of the signs that your brake rotors may need to be replaced.

Your Car Vibrates as You Come to a Stop

One of the signs that your rotors need to be replaced is that your car vibrates when you come to a stop. If your rotors are damaged, they develop grooves in them. These grooves cause your car to vibrate as it comes to a stop. When your rotors are smooth and even, your car comes to a smooth and seamless stop.

You Can Hear Grinding When You Apply Your Brakes

One of the tell-tale signs that there is a problem with your brake system is that you hear noises when you apply your brakes. If you hear squeaking or squealing when you apply your brakes, your brake pads or brake shoes may be worn. If you hear grinding when you apply the brake pads, your brake shoes are worn and they are digging into your rotors. This is a sign that both the shoes and rotors need to be replaced.

Your Car Pulls to One Side When You Apply Your Brakes

The final sign that your rotors need to be replaced is the sign that you may experience the least often. If your brake rotors are wearing unevenly, your car may pull to one side as you come to a stop. If you find yourself having to grip your steering wheel and hold it in the center position to prevent your car from shifting to the right or left when you apply your brakes, one or both of your rotors need to be replaced.

The rotors on your car may need to be replaced if you do not replace your brake pads soon enough. If this is the case, you may notice that your car vibrates when it is coming to a stop, you may hear grinding when you apply the brakes, or your car may pull to one side. Additionally, your brake rotors may need to be replaced if your rotors wear thin due to age or if they start to rust. An auto brake specialist can inspect your rotors and let you know if they need to be replaced.
